چکیده
Environmental impact assessments for new Arctic infrastructure do not adequately consider the likely long-term cumulative effects of climate change and to landforms vegetation in areas with ice-rich permafrost, due part lack environmental studies that monitor changes after is built. This case study examines (1949–2020) climate- road-related a network ice-wedge polygons, Prudhoe Bay Oilfield, Alaska. We studied four trajectories along heavily traveled road relatively remote site. During 20 years prior oilfield development, landscapes changed very little. 50 climate-related included increased numbers thermokarst ponds, ice-wedge-polygon morphology, snow distribution, thaw depths, dominant types, shrub abundance. Road dust strongly affected plant-community structure composition, particularly small forbs, mosses, lichens. Flooding permafrost degradation, polygon center-trough elevation contrasts, productivity. It was possible isolate impacts from impacts, but combined datasets provide unique insights into rate extent ecological disturbances associated infrastructure-affected under decades warming. conclude recommendations future permafrost.

Cumulative geoecological effects of 62 years of infrastructure and climate change in ice-rich permafrost landscapes, Prudhoe Bay Oilfield, Alaska.
Many areas of the Arctic are simultaneously affected by rapid climate change and rapid industrial development. These areas are likely to increase in number and size as sea ice melts and abundant Arctic natural resources become more accessible. Documenting the changes that have already occurred is essential to inform management approaches to minimize the impacts of future activities. Here, we de...

Elisabeth Hamin, for their guidance in constructing the project and for posing important questions that helped drive the design of the project. I would especially like to thank Tim Randhir for working with me to build the model. I would also like to thank Nancy Sammons and Raghavan Srinivasan for their extensive support in troubleshooting problems with the model. Their willingness to take time ...

We review current understanding of the potential impact of climate change on the Chesapeake Bay. Scenarios for CO2 emissions indicate that by the end of the 21 st century the Bay region will experience significant changes in climate forcings with respect to historical conditions, including increases in CO2 concentrations, sea level, and water temperature of 50–160%, 0.7–1.6 m, and 2–6 C, respec...
متن کاملIce-Wedge Polygon Type Controls Low-Gradient Watershed-Scale Hydrology
Ice-wedge polygons and related microtopographic variations are ubiquitous to landscapes underlain by permafrost. Highand low-centered polygons are typical but surprisingly, their role on hydrologic fluxes and stocks is not well quantified. We performed hydrologic modeling analyses using the physically-based model WaSiM-ETH that was forced by data from the Biocomplexity Experiment, Barrow, Alask...
متن کاملClimate Impacts of Ice Nucleation
[1] Several different ice nucleation parameterizations in two different General Circulation Models (GCMs) are used to understand the effects of ice nucleation on the mean climate state, and the Aerosol Indirect Effects (AIE) of cirrus clouds on climate. Simulations have a range of ice microphysical states that are consistent with the spread of observations, but many simulations have higher pres...
